This is the report of an attempt to understand spontaneous proposals for arithmetic algorithms coming from students with Italian and non Italian family background in Italian school. These algorithms are then used in an ethnomathematical activity aimed at constructing a cross-cultural mathematic knowledge available to everybody. Brousseau’s didactic contract is found to be an useful framework.
