Introducing square roots might be a complex challenge in learning mathematics, bringing both cognitive and emotional difficulties and challenging established beliefs. Sometimes, the topic is taught mechanically, without providing models or leaving room for questions, doubts, or curiosity.
This contribution describes a hands-on workshop carried out in seventh grade classes of Italian lower secondary school, inspired by Ausubel’s theory of meaningful learning, which promotes the integration of new concepts with prior knowledge in a motivating and collaborative environment. Through the folding of origami models and didactical games, students can build a solid understanding of square roots and their properties. The workshop, which was also tested with a blind student, fosters active learning, shared knowledge construction, and metacognitive reflection.
