This paper tries to move beyond the current debate on the role of language and linguistic competence in Mathematics education, which sometimes is ideological or elusive. Starting from the outcomes of a placement test aimed at the assessment of students' competences in scientific language and Mathematics' notations, the paper provides a first attempt interpretation of some of students' linguistic difficulties in mathematical setting.
