The belief that underlies the presented experience is that the use of money is a fundamental competence for children, in particular for students with disabilities; the ability to recognize banknotes and coins and how to use them makes it possible to gain autonomy and reduce the need for assistance from others, so as to improve the quality of life. In addition to highlight the inclusive potential underlying the use of money, it is important to point out how the mathematical competence in financial field is emphasized in the European Reference Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning of 2018.
The project presented was proposed to the children of a fourth-grade class of primary school; on that occasion, a meaningful learning context was recreated, able to favour the participation of children in the learning process. An experiential approach has been privileged, so as to encourage an active involvement and inspire motivation.
